As the starter pistol shot blanks on the morning of 18th September 2018, it marked the beginning of the athletics tournament in Bengaluru. The athletes of India’s IT hub had a chance to add another honour to their name, and they didn’t disappoint.

The Sports Authority of India Stadium hosted the athletics meet in Bengaluru for the second consecutive year and the environment buzzed with excitement. Being the fourth city to host the athletics meet this year, the day started with 800m, High Jump and Shot Put events. The finals of 800m race concluded on the first day itself for the Junior Boys, Junior Girls and College Boys categories. Clocking 2:11:81s and 2:13:02s respectively, Mutanna Nagappa M and Gopalagouda Sharnappa Gouda, representing Govt. Sports High School, came in 1st and 2nd on the podium in the Junior Boys category.

As the event progressed to the second day, the races in which finals were held got longer and tougher. The day witnessed the final of 5000m final in College Girls and Senior Boys. Malleshwari Rathod and Tejaswini M bagged the Gold and Silver in this event. But the talking point of the meet was 100m Sub-Junior Girls final in which Neole Cornelio, a 13-year-old sprinter from St Francis Xaviers Girls High School, who went past the U-14 National Record by clocking 12.72s.
After three days of the athletics meet, the awards for best institutes across all the eight categories were handed out. Govt. Sports High School were awarded the best institute in the Sub-Junior Boys, Junior Girls and Junior Boys categories and clearly dominated the awards list. St. Francis Xavier Girls High School were awarded as the best school in the Sub-Junior girls’ category. Overall, RFYS Bengaluru was an immense success with Neole’s record-breaking feat the highlight of the 3-day meet.
