The 18th edition of Asian Games will kick-start on 18th August in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang. 572 athletes from India will feature in this multi-sport event scheduled to be held till 2nd September. 20-year-old Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will have the privilege to lead the Indian contingent at the Asian Games opening ceremony.

Independent India hosted the inaugural Asian Games in 1951 and went on to win 22 medals. Over the years, India has had quite a few notable moments in this tournament. Whether it be winning the gold in Football in 1951 and 62 to Mary Kom’s historic gold in 2014. While all eyes will be on the likes of PV Sindhu, Dipa Karmakar, Sakshi Malik, Hima Das, Sushil Kumar, Manika Batra, Indian Hockey teams and Kabaddi teams, etc., it will be interesting to see how the young prospects, who’ve impressed with their performances, will perform in this prestigious tournament.

In the previous edition of Asian Games, India claimed 57 medals, 13 of those, in Athletics. Hima Das, after becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold in IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championship, will be going for gold in both 200m and 400m categories. Along with her, Dutee Chand will be competing in 100m and 200m category. In men’s category, Mohammed Anas will be aiming big for India in 200m and 400m categories. Indian women in 4x400 relay category have made the nation proud for three times in a row at Asian Games by winning gold in 2006 (Doha), 2010 (Guangzhou) and 2014 (Incheon) and will be hoping to increase their tally.

The growing influence of Indian athletes on the global platform is a clear sign on abundant talent hidden in the country. While there have been athletes who were able to grab every opportunity and dodge every hurdle to climb the ladder, there have also been numerous instances of talented athletes quitting the field, due to lack of adequate opportunities. RFYS Athletic tournament was initiated with an intention of unearthing such talent from all parts of the nation, making sure no talent is left behind. The performance of Indian athletes at the Asian Games 2018 will not only make our country proud but will also inspire thousands of young athletes who dream of making it big while RFYS will always be well equipped to provide these youngsters with the opportunities they rightfully deserve.
