Cheering supporters, excited players, a beautiful pitch and lots of passion, this is how the day began at Rajagiri Public School ground, Kalamassery, Ernakulam. The ground was ready for the city finals, and Jr. Boys, Sr. Boys, Sr. Girls and College Boys City Championship trophies were up for grabs today.

Sr. Girls from Mar Augustine’s School and Asissi Vidyanikethan Public School faced each other in the first final. The game began on a positive note for Mar Augustine’s School as they scored in the sixth minute of the game. Asissi Vidyanikethan Public School held their fort after conceding a goal till thirty minutes but let another one through just before half time. Mar Augustine’s School came out in the second half with a two-goal lead and they doubled it before full time to win the game 4-0. Mar Augustine’s School’s attacking prowess helped them clinch the Sr. Girls City Championship.

The Jr. Boys final between Sacred Heart HSSS and Jama-ath HSS was a tale of two halves. The first half ended with both teams cancelling each other out and adopting a defense-first approach. They entered the half-time break with a 0-0 scoreline. Sacred Heart HSSS changed gears immediately in the second half and scored two goals in the first five minutes after the break. Their strikers were always on the prowl and pounced on any given opportunity. This strategy enabled them to score four more goals before full time. Sacred Heart HSSS’ defenders did not concede a goal and they went on to win the Jr. Boys City Championship 6-0.

Contrary to the two high-scoring finals held in the morning, the third final of the day was a closely-contested game. The goal keepers of both Sr. Boys sides displayed immense skill in this game which was decided by a solitary goal. Govt. HSS (Panampally Nagar) scored the decisive goal in the final against Sacred Heart HSSS to win 1-0. Sacred Heart HSSS’ Sr. Boys tried to replicate their Jr. Boys’ aggressive performance but their efforts were marred by some strong defending by Govt. HSS.

Both teams started positively but failed to capitalize on the opportunities. Thus, the first half of the game went goalless. In an action-packed second half, Nirmala College scored in the 75th and 77th minute to take a two-goal lead. The deficit was reduced by a goal when Sacred Heart College found the back of the net in the 82nd minute. The scoreline remained 2-1 at full time and Nirmala College were crowned as City Champions.
