RFYS athletics gets off the mark in Hyderabad

Reliance Foundation Youth Sports kicked-off with athletics in the city of Hyderabad along with the West Zonal Championships in Pune today, and semi-finals which continued in Kolkata.

The West Zonal Championships began with the College Boys category, as Rizvi College of Arts, Science and Commerce edged out a 1-0 win over Spicer Adventist University. The goal scored by Aravindraj Singh just before the half-time whistle proved to be the difference, as his contribution also helped him bag the Player of the Match award.

Thakur College of Science and Commerce put on a show in their Championship game. They beat St. Vincent’s High School 6-2, with Mithilesh Kasare picking up four goals, and the Player of the Match award.

Fr. Agnel Multipurpose School and Junior College narrowly got past The Bishops School, General Bhagat Marg Camp, with a 1-0 win. It was heart-breaking for the losing team as they conceded the only goal of the game in the final four minutes.

The Junior Boys Round Robin match of the West Zonal Championship saw Don Bosco High School register a 3-0 win over Loyola High School. They will be the team to look out for in the upcoming rounds.

The city of Kolkata hosted semi-final fixtures in the School Girls and College Boys categories and got the ball rolling straight away. First up, the School Girls of Chaturdash Palli High School squared up against Barisha Vivekananda Girls High School. Susmita Bardhan lead Chaturdash’s attack as they humbled their opponents 30-0 at full-time. Their Captain, Susmita, was adjudged the Player of the Match for scoring an unbelievable 20 goals.

The School Girls game between Behala Sarada Vidyapith for Girls and Ganipur Shitala High School was a contest to reach the final, where the winner would meet Chaturdash Palli High School. The deadlock was broken in the 12th minute when Ipsita Roy got Behala on the scoresheet. Another two goals by Ipsita in the second half meant that Behala advanced into the final of the School Girls City Championship. Ipsita Roy went home with the match ball for her amazing hat-trick.

In the College Boys semi-final, Charuchandra College secured a narrow 2-1 win over New Alipore College. Striker Firoj Ali scored in the dying minutes of extra time and got the all-important goal for Charuchandra, a feat that made him the Player of The Match.

Netaji Nagar Day College and Vivekananda College Thakurpukur played out an exciting 90 minutes but failed to score any goals. In the penalty shootout, Netaji Nagar overcame their opponents 7-5 and booked a final clash with Charuchandra College.

RFYS Athletics began on Monday in the city of Hyderabad, Bhavan's Sri Aurobindo Jr. College and Telangana SSS emerging victorious in the 4x100 m relay.
