Minerva and The Unique Model set for final showdown

The Reliance Foundation Youth Sports (RFYS) football tournament National Championship semi-finals took place today with the fate of the Junior Boys and School Girls finalists being sealed.

The first semi-final saw the high-flying Junior boys of Minerva Public School (MPS), Chandigarh, put through a tough 60 minutes by Gangadharpur Vidyamandir (GV), Kolkata. At the end, a 25th-minute strike from Luntingmang Haokip for Minerva Public School turned out to be the difference as the team from Kolkata gave it their all, but could not break down Minerva’s defence.

A feisty North-East encounter was on the cards in the second semi-final of the day. The Unique Model Academy (TUMA), Imphal, and Om Roy Memorial Higher Secondary School (ORMHSS), Shillong, produced some quality football at different stages of the game. From the word go, it was the team from Imphal which got off the blocks quickly and had a three-goal lead by the 57th minute. With just over three minutes plus stoppage time to go, ORMHSS grabbed two goals in a span of just under two minutes. Eventually, this late surge was taken care of by the team from Imphal, as they grabbed a late winner and finished the game as 4-2 winners. With this win, The Unique Model secured an exciting clash with Minerva Public School for the Junior Boys National Championship trophy.

The School Girls of Umthli Secondary School, Shillong, put in a dominant performance to emerge 2-0 winners against My Own High School, Ahmedabad. Goals in the 12th and 25th minute did the job as Umthli Secondary School once again helped emphasize why they are the favourites to lift the National Championship trophy come 6th January.
