Minerva Punjab, champions yet again!

On Tuesday evening, May 8, 2018, Minerva Punjab FC clinched the maiden U-13 Youth League title by beating Mohammedan Sporting Club 3-0 at the Barasat stadium in Kolkata. A 3rd minute goal put Minerva Punjab in the driver’s seat early in the game. Despite Mohammedan SC trying to fight back, all hopes of a comeback dwindled after Himanshu Jangra’s second half brace, ensuring Minerva Punjab’s victory.

The win was no surprise given how formidable the team had been throughout the tournament. After sailing through the group stage with a 100% winning record, the team continued the streak by powering through the semi-final with a 5-0 over Sudeva Football Club.

The U-13 Youth League was, however, not the first impressive performance by Minerva Punjab FC. The club’s performance in the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports’ tournament was commendable. Emerging as City champions, the club progressed into the National Championships final in the Junior and Senior Boys’ categories. While the Junior Boys lost to The Unique Model Academy, Imphal, in a penalty shootout, the Senior Boys beat Goa’s Rosary Higher Secondary School with an imposing margin of four goals. The tournament marked the start of a memorable run for the club.

In February, the club won the U-15 Youth League – known as Nike Premier Cup – for the third time in a row. This was followed by the senior team bagging its maiden I-League title in March. It has been year studded with silverware for Minerva Punjab as a football club, proving its dominance in all categories. What makes the feat unique is how few are the number of occasions when a club has been the undisputable champion in all categories. The fact that the club has produced 36 players who are playing for the Indian National Team in various age categories is something the club must take pride in.
