Guwahati, the largest city in Assam, hosted the RFYS 2018-19 City Championship final today at the SAI Stadium where eight of the best School and College teams toiled hard to become the City Champion in their respective category. One of the footballing hubs in the Northeast and home to Indian Super League Club - Northeast United FC - witnessed four mouth-watering finals.

The proceedings began with Anchalik Jatiiya Vidyalaya’s dominance over Bethany Convent School in the School Girls Final. From the word go, Anchalik Jatiiya Vidyalaya bombarded Bethany’s goal with an all out attack and had a pretty good success rate at that. The full-time score read 11-0 with their star strikers Jwmwi Daimary and Pakhila Boro scoring four and six goals respectively. In a game where strikers scored a total of 10 goals, Anchalik’s defender Bhabani Boro went home with the Championship trophy as well as the Player of the Match award for her defensive prowess. With such a resounding win, Anchalik Jatiiya Vidyalaya set up a perfect platform for other teams to follow.
The Senior Boys Final between Dispur Academy and WIPS Junior College was a spectator’s dream come true. Dispur gained the advantage after striking first in the 23rd minute, followed by an equalizer by WIPS five minutes later. The teams headed into the tunnel with a score line of 2-1 reading in favour of Dispur, after Brolin Ingti’s 37th minute goal. A rejuvenated WIPS team graced the field in the second half and managed to score twice in quick successions with an equalizer in 86th minute and the winner in injury time to script a memorable comeback and clinch the Senior Boys City Championship trophy. Dispur had a decent crowd cheering for them from the stands, and even though their team fell short on the big day, their performance throughout the tournament was commendable, to say the least.

If there’s one thing that’s better than a football final between two splendid teams, it’s a final which is decided through a penalty shootout. The Junior Boys fixture between Ramfalbil Higher Secondary School and Bangfar Belguri Secondary School was like a watching a see-saw competition between two equally opportunistic teams. After ending the match all square at 1-1, it was time for the winner to be decided through a penalty shootout. Heroes rise when they are needed the most and Ramfalbil Higher Secondary School’s keeper, Bijit Mushary, was that hero who rose to the occasion. His heroics between the sticks, wherein he made some vital saves, was enough to clinch his team a 4-3 win over Bangfar. Thus, another close game of football ended with Ramfalbil Higher Secondary School winning the battle of nerves and also the Junior Boys Championship of Guwahati.

The College Boys fixture between Kokhrajhar Govt College and PUB Bongsor College was a carbon copy of the Junior Boys fixture. After being 2-2 at the end of the game, Kokhrajhar managed to hold their own in the penalty shootout and edged PUB Bongsor 4-3 to be crowned the College Boys Champions.
The winning teams will be hoping for similar results when they face other teams from the East Zone in the National Qualifiers. The teams from Guwahati showcased a lot of grit in the City Championship and the viewers and spectators got to witness a great day of football. With Kolkata and Bhubaneswar still waiting for its own City Champions, the clock is ticking closer to the day which leads to an epic showdown in the National Qualifiers.
