RFYS Athletics gets underway in Kolkata

Reliance Foundation Youth Sports (RFYS) Athletics commenced in the city of Kolkata on the 15th of January 2018.

With Kolkata being the last city to host athletics before the National Championship in Mumbai commences, the whole atmosphere was buzzing with excitement. Events like 5000m, Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump were hosted on the first day in Kolkata.

Swarup Bag started the day by winning the Gold Medal in the Senior Boys Triple Jump. His distance was an impressive 13.4m. In the 5000m Senior Boys race, Subhajit Sarkar won first place on the podium. Sagar Acharya of Teghoria Sashi Bhusan High School bagged the first position in the 1500m Senior Boys final. In the same event in the Junior Boys category, it was Tanmoy Santra who clinched Gold with an impressive run of 4 minutes and 41 seconds.

In the College Boys 5000m final, Samir Paul from Charuchandra College finished first and took his place on the top of the podium. Charuchandra College is known for a rich sporting history, with the College Boys football team winning the 2016 RFYS National Championship last year, a source of inspiration for young Samir. The 400m Senior Girls final saw Puja Mondal come out on top. Prakriti Bepari, representing Asutosh Smriti Mandir Balika Vidyalaya, went home with the Gold Medal in the Senior Girls 100m sprint.
