A story that was RFYS Athletics
By the end of 2017, Reliance Foundation Youth Sports (RFYS), had already made a name for itself as one of the best tournaments in the country to find India’s future football superstars. India’s appetite to excel in all kinds of sports was growing by the day and athletics is one such sport that India needed to put its stamp on.

The addition of RFYS Athletics in the second season meant that the hunt for India’s next-gen athletes, who would represent the nation at the world stage had begun. RFYS was already finding footballing talents like Ajith Sivan and now it was time to find athletes that would represent India at the Olympics in the future.

In its inaugural season, RFYS Athletics held competitions in eight different venues across India. Track events like 100m, 200m, 400m, 1500m as well Long Jump, High Jump and Triple Jump were conducted as part of the tournament. The eight cities to host these events were Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Kozhikode, Kolkata and Chandigarh. Over 2500 Institutes and 9000 athletes registered for the events across the eight cities. The winner among these would go on to compete against each other in the National Championship in Mumbai.

In the first season itself, many athletes came close to beating the National Record in their respective events. Nehal S clocked an impressive finish time of 11.04 seconds in the Junior Boys 100m race and was just 0.03 seconds behind the national record of 11.01 seconds whereas in the Junior Boys High Jump event, Mohamed Asif finished with a jump of 2.01m and fell just 0.02m short of the national record 2.03m.

Perhaps the biggest accomplishment so far was that over 2400 Girl Athletes registered for RFYS in its first season itself. Over 90 students were recognized for their extraordinary talent and given scholarships by RFYS.  A great first season for RFYS Athletics wrapped up with the National Championship in Mumbai and by the end of the tournament, RFYS had conducted more than 3000 events across India. As the scale of the event is set to grow bigger each year, the countdown for the upcoming season has begun. To know more about different events and their winners, visit us on www.rfyouthsports.com.
