There’s nothing more painful in Football than reaching the group stages of a tournament final only to go down fighting. In the RFYS Football tournament, Indira College of Commerce and Science, Pune, are one team that’s been there and felt that in the inaugural edition. Two years later, Indira College have once again made their passage to the National Championship and they’ll look to go all the way.
Pune’s institute didn’t make it past the group stages in 2016-17 National Championship, but banking on some remarkable performances in RFYS 2018-19, Indira College look like a team hungry to put their past failures to rest. Their City Championship campaign saw them score goals in abundance, and it started with a 9-0 victory over Dr. DY Patil Arts, Commerce and Science Senior College. Some of their feats include winning 5 games and keeping 5 clean-sheets out of a possible 6. In the City Championship final, when they crossed roads with Ness Wadia College of Commerce, they came out 1-0 winners and were crowned the RFYS College Boys City Champions of Pune.
In the West Zone 2 National Qualifiers, they were placed in a difficult pool consisting of Champions from Kolhapur and Goa. In the first match of their West Zone 2 National Qualifiers Campaign, they came out victorious against S.B Khade Mahavidyalaya and defeated them 4-1. Up next were Fr. Agnel College of Arts and Commerce, Goa’s Champions, they came back from a goal behind and secured a 2-1 victory and on the way booked their spot in the National Championship. Bhuvan Pillay has been their highest goal-scorer so far and has six goals under his tally.
An experienced side that knows how to make comebacks through sheer persistence, Indira College’s chances to advance to the National Championship knockout stages are on the up. Although, when it comes to the College Boys category, only the fittest survive. It’ll be interesting to see if Indira College can break through the wall, rather than survive behind it.
32 best teams from the City Championships will be competing in Mumbai from 29th December – 7th January and all the matches of the National Championship will be live-streamed on our website and Facebook.
