Hailing from Dhing village in Assam, 18-year-old Hima Das has earned a mention in the history books of Indian sports by bagging a gold medal in the 400 metres final at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland. What is noteworthy about this feat is that this is India’s first ever gold in a track event at a global athletics’ meet. She clocked 51.46 seconds, ahead of Romania’s Andrea Miklos who took the silver in 52.07 seconds and USA’s Taylor Manson who bagged bronze in 52.28 seconds.

Starting in lane number 4, Das had a comparatively slow start. Although her trademark burst in the final quarter of the race saw her overtake three of her counterparts. This win makes her a member of an elite group of Indian athletes who have achieved laurels at the IAAF World U20 Championships. Although, Das – being the only track athlete – stands out.

Her proud coach Nipon Das was all praise for the teenager who first put on her running shoes only two years ago. And why not, given Das’ inspiring journey from Assam’s rice fields to the running track where she triumphed at the global stage. The daughter of a rice farmer defied all odds that stood in her way. Owing to her undeterred will and raw speed that astonishes her coaches, Das has not only broken the U20 national record in 400m, but also bettered her previous timing to make it as fast as 51.13 seconds.

This historic victory at the World Championships has prompted an elaborate celebration across the country. Our honourable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi congratulated Hima on Twitter and was optimistic about young athletes seeking inspiration from her performance.

“I am very happy to win the gold in the World Junior championships. I want to thank all the Indians back home and also those who were here cheering me. It was very encouraging to have this kind of support," Hima said after the race. She also managed to clock the fastest time at the championships by winning her semi-final race in 52.10 seconds on Wednesday.
