City Finals Day 13: City Champions of Chandigarh

The first match of the day kicked off between  St. Stephens School and Government Model Senior Secondary School.

 

The first match of the day kicked off between  St. Stephens School and Government Model Senior Secondary School. This was a School Girls fixture. The only action in the first half was a Government Model goal scored by Sugam Rawat in the 29th minute. Government Model scored again in the 47th minute to make the score 2-0 with a strike from Gunpreet Kaur. That ended up being the final score as St. Stephen’s could not mount any sort of offense. Government Model won the championship on the back of some good teamwork.

The second match was in the Senior Boys Division between Saint Soldier International School and Chitkara International School. The first score of the match was an own goal by Saint Soldier’s Sunny Dahiya. Both sides had a couple of chances in the first half but could not convert due to amazing saves by both goalkeepers. Chitkara International scored in the 46th minute with a strike Aelan Singh. Again in the 57th minute, Singh scored for them taking his team up to 3-0. Time was running out for Saint Soldier’s strikers to score, and Bhavya Jangid made it harder when he scored for Chitkara in the 65th minute. In the end, Chitkara ended up winning 4-0 as Saint Soldier had no luck in the goal-scoring department.

The third match of the day was between Government Model High School, Sector 36 and Namdhari Sports Academy in the Sub-Junior Boys Division. The game started with an own goal by Rashpal Singh of Namdhari putting Government Model up 1-0 very early on. Government Model scored again with a freekick by Sarthak Aswal in the 24th minute. The second half started with an array of goals from Government Model in the 32nd, 37th, 42nd, and 43rd minutes. They were scored by Thongbam Lanchenba Singh, Sarthak Aswal, Arbeend Thongram and again Thongbam Lanchenba Singh respectively. Thongbam got his hat trick with a score in the 54th minute and scored his second goal of the game in the 60th minute. Try as they might, Namdhari could not score and lost the championship game 8-0.

The fourth match of the day, a Junior Boys game, was between Minerva Public School and Chitkara International School. Chitkara struck first with a strike from Gurnoor Singh in the 26th minute. The first half ended with no more goals. Minerva changed tactics in the second half and started playing significantly better but it was to no avail. Chitkara managed to hold on to their slim lead on the way to a 1-0 win. You can check out the match stats here.

 

The final match on the docket for the day was between Post Graduate Government College and Sri Guru Gobind Singh School. This was a College Boys fixture. The first score of the game was made in the 32nd minute Post Graduate’s Rahul Raiger. Guru Gobind managed to claw their way back to a tie with a free-kick goal by Pankaj Kshatri in the 48th minute. Scores were level at the final whistle and the match went into a penalty shootout. Guru Gobind ended up winning the match via a penalty shootout win of 4-2.
