City Finals Day 1: Meghalaya Celebrates its Newest Champions!

The 1st match kicked off at 7:00 am between defending champions Shillong College HSS and St Anthony's HSS in the Senior Boys category.

The 1st match kicked off at 7:00 am between defending champions Shillong College HSS and St Anthony's HSS in the Senior Boys category.

St Anthony’s tried to take charge early on as Justerwell Tham beat 3 defenders but was unable to test the keeper in the 7th minute. Kitboklang Khyriem from Shillong College HSS missed a chance in the St Anthony’s HSS penalty box in the 11th minute. However, it was St Anthony’s who broke the deadlock in the 23rd​ minute as Ksankupar Massar found the back of the net with a beautiful left-footed free kick.

Shillong College HSS fought back as they bombarded the opposition half time and again. Their persistence was rewarded with an equalizer, courtesy of an own goal by St Anthony’s HSS defender Ban Iai Ap Pohshna, who mistimed a header and scored past his own goalkeeper.

Shillong College HSS’ Baiiaikara Swer was penalized for a tough challenge and was shown a yellow card by the referee in the 34th minute. St Anthony’s HSS took the lead again in the 36th minute, as Nevielle I Majaw found plenty of time in the opposition penalty area to head the ball past the Shillong College goalkeeper and make it 1-2. However, Shillong College clawed their way back into the game, courtesy of Kitboklang Khyriem, who didn’t miss the second time and scored the equalizer in the 40​th minute.

Shillong College were probably caught celebrating for too long, as Nevielle I Majaw scored for St.Anthony’s again in the 42nd minute to make it 2-3. At half-time, it was St.Anothony’s HSS who entered into the break with a lead.


St.Anthony’s HSS started the second half from where they left in the first half, attacking the Shillong College end. In the 47th​ minute Justerwell Tham received two yellow cards in a space of 10 minutes and had to walk off the pitch as St.Anthony’s HSS were reduced to 10 men.

Shillong College looked keen to leverage the numerical advantage and brought on Glennys Godfrey Lynrah, who scored 2 goals in the space of 13 minutes to establish Shillong College’s dominance in the final with the score at 5-3. St.Anthony’s tried to mount a comeback but Shillong College showed everyone present on the grounds as to why they were the defending champions. They quickly added 2 more goals to their tally to make it 7-3 and secure their passage to the National Qualifiers. Banshemphang Kurbah and Kitboklang Khyriem scored the 6th and 7th goal respectively for Shillong College.

The School Girls category saw Umthli Secondary School take on Lady Keane College for the top spot.

Both sides tried hard to get in front in the 1​st half, but a compact defense and solid goalkeeping in both the camps meant that the 1st half ended in 0-0.

The only goal of the match came in the 2nd​ half. At the 54-minute mark, Riteihuin Kharshing propelled Umthli Secondary School in the lead as her shot from outside the box somehow found its way into the Lady Keane College goal. This was enough for Umthli Secondary School to win the title for the 2nd​ time, having won the same previously in the 2017-18 season.

St Anthony's Higher Secondary School and H Elias Memorial faced off in the Sub-Junior Boys final.

Both sides started off well and managed to keep the opponents at bay with brilliant saves and tackles.

However, Refill Stone Sohshang had other ideas and was able to breach the opponent’s defense. His brilliant header gave St.Anthony’s HSS the lead, minutes before the 1st half whistle was blown.

The second half was a yellow-card fest with as many as 5 yellow cards being dished out by the referee (St. Anthony’s HSS x 2, H Elias Memorial x 3).

However, no goals were scored in the 2nd half, which ensured that St. Anthony’s HSS emerged as champions in this particular category.

H Elias Memorial and Army Boys Sports Company took to the pitch to face each other in this Junior Boys final.

The match started on a less positive note for the Army Boys as T Shitiz Pradhan and Nitesh Dorjee, both receiving yellow cards early in the game.

H ELIAS MEMORIAL HSS were awarded a penalty, which was calmly dispatched by Gladdy Nelson Kharbuli as he opened his team's account.

The second half began brightly for H Elias Memorial as they added 2 more goals to their tally, in a span of 3 minutes, making the score 3-0. In the 52​nd minute, ARMY BOYS SPORT COMPANY tried to mount a comeback through Swarneem Gurung’s goal but a goal in the last minute of the game from Gladdy Nelson Kharbuli sealed the win for H Elias Memorial with a score line of 4-1.

While Shillong College would have been wanting to replicate the success of the Senior Boys, earlier in the day, St Anthony's College must have wanted to payback in terms of the results.

SHILLONG COLLEGE started brightly. Despite receiving two yellow cards in the 17​th and 27th​ minute respectively, they looked more likely to open the scoring.

And their persistence and effort paid off as Phrangki Buam opened the account for SHILLONG COLLEGE in the 23rd minute. He later doubled the lead for his team as he sweetly struck the ball from the half-way line in the 34​th minute.

St. Anthony’s College fought back in the 2nd​ half with 2 goals. Chanmitre Thma scored in the 79th minute and Dawanchwa Carlos Challam hit the equalizer in the 85​th minute. With the score locked at 2-2 at the final whistle, the match had to be decided on penalties

Both teams started off by saving a goal each, but later the players kept finding the net regularly.

With the score at 9-8 in sudden death, St. Anthony’s College could not convert the final penalty and was unfortunate to lose the tie 9-8, leaving Shillong College as crowned champions.
