After witnessing weeks of intense footballing action during the City Finals and National Qualifiers, the stage was set for 40 teams, out of which 5 teams would be crowned as National Champions.

On a chilly December morning, the Senior and Junior Boys started warming up as the league stage of the 2019-20 RFYS National Football Championships kicked off on 27th December, at the Fr. Agnel Grounds, Navi Mumbai.

Day 1 of the National Championships saw a total of 8 matches played, throughout the day. 4 matches from the Junior Boys category and 4 from the Senior Boys category put on display, some mesmerizing football. You can check all the results from Day 1, here.

A total of 31 goals were scored across the matches played on Day 1. With just a solitary draw in the Junior Boys category, the attacking prowess of the teams was on display, in both the categories. Here are the Top 5 Goals from Day 1 of the National Championships.

While the backline had a hard time in protecting the goal and all the teams except one conceding, the goalkeepers did their best to keep the opposition attack at bay. Sliding tacklers, reflex saves, dives and accurate anticipation were displayed in plenty by the custodians guarding the goals. The Top 5 Saves from Day 1 will certainly astonish you, leave you wondering that despite being so young, these goalkeepers have shown maturity beyond their years to pull off these stunners.

With plenty of matches still remaining at the close of play on Day 1, the teams that won were a step closer to qualifying for the next round. The  teams that fell short, went back to the drawing boards to reassess their strategies.

Stay tuned as we review Day 2 of the National Championships next week, in our Throwback Thursdays series!
