Building Integrity in Indian Sport: Reliance Foundation Launches Athlete Education Programme
A structured programme focusing on and related nutrition and ethics, aims to equip athletes with the knowledge to make informed decisions
As Indian sport pushes towards global excellence, integrity is becoming as critical as performance. Recognising this need, Reliance Foundation has introduced a structured six-module video series in very simple language which is easy to understand for athletes across India and across age groups aimed at equipping athletes with a deeper understanding of anti-doping, nutrition, and ethical decision-making.
The opening module lays the foundation for this initiative, offering athletes a comprehensive introduction to the realities of high-performance sport. It brings into focus not just the demands of competition, but the responsibilities that come with it.
At the heart of the programme is the issue of doping, a challenge that continues to impact Indian sport. Since 2013, India has consistently featured among the top ten nations in reports published by the World Anti-Doping Agency for anti-doping rule violations. While the country’s sporting ambitions continue to grow, this statistic highlights a parallel need for stronger awareness and education.
The programme breaks down doping violations into two broad categories: intentional and unintentional. While deliberate use of banned substances remains a concern, a significant number of violations stem from gaps in awareness. Limited understanding of anti-doping regulations, confusion around supplements, and external influences such as peer pressure often contribute to poor decision-making among athletes.
The programme also introduces athletes to the fundamentals of anti-doping regulations, helping them understand prohibited substances, testing protocols, and their responsibilities within the system.

By addressing these factors directly, the initiative aims to move beyond enforcement and towards prevention through simple education. The emphasis is on empowering athletes with knowledge, enabling them to make informed choices in high-pressure environments.
Alongside anti-doping awareness, the programme also introduces athletes to the importance of nutrition and ethical conduct. It positions performance as a combination of physical preparation, informed choices, and adherence to core sporting values.
It also highlights the consequences of doping, including suspensions, reputational damage, and the long-term impact on an athlete’s career and credibility.
The broader objective of the initiative is to develop athletes who are not just competitors, but custodians of sport. By instilling a strong foundation in ethics and integrity, Reliance Foundation aims to nurture individuals who understand the long-term impact of their decisions, both on their careers and on the sporting ecosystem.

The first module serves as a starting point in this journey, setting the tone for a structured learning pathway. It concludes by introducing the next phase of the programme, which will explore values, ethics, and integrity in greater depth.
As Indian sport evolves, such initiatives reflect a larger shift. Success is no longer defined by results alone, but by the values that sustain them.
