RFYS Blog: National Championship Day 8

Welcome to Day 8 at RFYS National Championship! Yesterday, the finalists in the Junior Boys and Senior Boys categories were confirmed.

4:00 PM
Nirmala College came from a goal behind to record a stunning 3-1 victory over Guru Gobind Khalsa College. Dharampreet Singh had given Ludhiana’s champions the lead, but Nirmala College roared back with three goals to make sure they still remain in the hunt to fight for the trophy. This is the second time the institute from Kochi has made it to the finals and they will be hoping they avenge their loss of 2016/17.

With that match, the day’s play has concluded, and we now have our finalists confirmed and the teams that will take field on 7th January. The fixtures are as follows:

1) St. Anthony’s HSS vs Maharana Pratap Sports College (Junior Boys final)

2) Faith HSS vs Nilamani English School (School Girls final)

3) MSP HSS vs Shillong HSS (Senior Boys final)

4) Nirmala College vs Thakur College (College Boys final)

Its all square at the break. Dharampreet Singh’s 2nd minute strike was quickly cancelled out by Nirmala College’s Arjun V. Kochi’s champions have enjoyed the better part of 45 minutes but couldn’t make the most out of their openings. Watch the second half live here.

The College Boys semi-final clash between Nirmala College and Guru Hargobind Khalsa College is seconds away from kick off! The two teams battle it out for the right to face Thakur College in the final. Watch the game here.
 
1:00 PM 
Thakur College dominated the first forty-five minutes but fell behind to a brilliant strike by Robert Khongjoh. The high tempo continued in the second half as Mumbai's City Champions scored three goals to get the better of 10-men Shillong College. TCM's goalkeeper was the hero as his penalty saves ensured they enter the final over Shillong's champions.

11:00 AM
In the second School Girls semi final clash, Nilamani English School thrashed Anchalik Jatiya Vidyalaya 7-0 and progressed to the final. Imphal’s champions attacked from the word go, and only needed 13 minutes to get the breakthrough, courtesy of Kritina Devi Thounaojam. Kritina eventually get her brace in the 26th minute, before Silky Hemam bagged one before the half time. Second half started as usual with Serto Linda Kom netting a hat-trick to round off a dominant display.

Govt. Girls HSS exited the RFYS championship on penalties after being outplayed in the second half. Shubhangi Singh pulled Faith HSS level in the second half and ensured the game goes to penalties. Both teams had a few chances to go ahead after the equalizer but couldn’t quite capitalize on the chances. Missed penalties from the champions of Coimbatore saw them being eliminated 4-2 to Faith HSS.

It has been an intriguing first half, with neither side particularly having a strong hold of the game, but Anitha K’s strike ensures Govt. Girls HSS go into the break with the lead. Watch the game here.
