The Reliance Foundation Youth Sports Football tournament continued with the National Championship semi-finals taking place in the Senior Boys and College Boys category.

The first semi-final of the day saw Minerva Public School, Chandigarh showcase utter dominance in their impressive 3-1 victory over St. Anthony Higher Secondary School, Shillong. The two goals scored by half-time without conceding any in return showcased how much effort the team from Chandigarh had put in their training sessions to be comfortable meeting crosses with pinpoint finishes. Although St. Anthony managed to get one back after the break, they never looked to be in the driving seat throughout the game. At the end, it was a comfortable win for Minerva, who are in peak form going into the final of the National Championship this year.

The second semi-final of the day saw the Senior Boys of Kapasdanga Vidyapith, Kolkata, take on Rosary Higher Secondary School, Goa. Coming into the game, the team from Goa knew they had a tough task on their hands, considering their opponents had not lost a single game in the Zonal stage. All such nerves were settled quickly as Baggio Fernandes gave Rosary an early lead in the 3rd minute. Since then Rosary tried hard to deal with the constant pressure that Kapasdanga applied on them, and this resilience lasted till the 40th minute when Uttam Mitra ultimately equalized for the team from Kolkata. Play resumed after the break with both teams being extremely cautious waiting for the opponent to make a mistake. But it was Stendly Fernandes who got the winning goal for the Goans, taking them to the finals.

A sensational free-kick from Shahajas was the main highlight of the first half in the College Boys semi-final between Baselius College, Kochi and St Anthony’s College, Shillong. The free-kick helped the team from Kochi head into the break with a 2-0 lead. The second half was more of the same with Dibin MD making it 3-0 in the 70th minute. At 3-0, the game seemed to be done and dusted but St. Anthony had other plans. Goals in the 81st and 83rd minute set up an intense end to the game, only for Baselius to hang on and just about take the win 3-2.

A goal just before half-time sealed the deal for Zakir Hussain College, Delhi, in their clash against Netaji Nagar Day College. With nothing to choose from in either team, the game was mostly concentrated in the central half of the pitch with minimal breaks made by either team on their opposition’s goal. Mujtaba Khan’s 49th-minute strike was the only vital highlight that separated both the teams.
