RFYS Season 4 Throwback Thursdays: National Championships, Day 2

The excitement around the ground was palpable as the players returned to the field for Day 2 of the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports (RFYS) National Championships. Clear skies greeted the players above Fr. Agnel Grounds, Navi Mumbai and Reliance Corporate Park, Mumbai, where the tournament was taking place but it was soon raining goals as the strikers showed no mercy to hapless defences.

 

The excitement around the ground was palpable as the players returned to the field for Day 2 of the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports (RFYS) National Championships. Clear skies greeted the players above Fr. Agnel Grounds, Navi Mumbai and Reliance Corporate Park, Mumbai, where the tournament was taking place but it was soon raining goals as the strikers showed no mercy to hapless defences.

 

There were a staggering 57 goals scored from just 12 matches with four games played in the Sub Junior Boys division, four in the School Girls category and four in the College Boys category. Out of the 12 games, only four ended in draws with points shared between both teams. Check out the full list of results here.

 

The day began with a 2-2 draw between Vels Vidhyashram, Chennai and Betkuchi HS, Guwahati in the sub junior boys category before two tight 1-0 results in the same category with Govt. Model HS, Sector 36, Chandigarh and The Unique Model Academy, Imphal emerging winners.

 

The fireworks truly began in the third game of the day when the School Girls category got underway with Govt. Girls HSS, Namakkal handing a 9-0 drubbing to Gorkha Military Inter College, Dehradun. The high-scoring encounters didn’t stop there as Progress HS, Goa beat Malabar Special Police HSS, Malappuram 5-1 in the next game of the Sub Junior Boys category.

 

 

 

The highest scoring match of the day was still to come though as Shillong College, Laitumkhrah showed DAV PG College, Dehradun no mercy beating their opponents with an imposing 11-1 scoreline. Roberth Khongjoh and Samuel Kynshi scored four goals each as the boys from Shillong showed off their skills. While the strikers were busy thumping in the goals, the goalkeepers weren’t always letting them have their way with some heroic performances between the posts. Despite leaky defences, the keepers put in an extra shift and ensured the strikers really had to work hard if they wanted to find the back of the net. We’ve put together some of the best saves from Day 2 for all you goalkeeping aficionados to enjoy.

 

The College Boys category witnessed more high-scoring encounters as Sharda University, Delhi beat S.S. Dempo College of Commerce & Economics, Goa by a 4-1 margin. This was followed by Indore Christian College winning 6-1 against Loyola College, Chennai.

 

Rosary HSS, Goa also prevailed 5-1 against St. Mary’s HSS, An Mangalam in the School Girls category in what was the penultimate match of the day.

 

Amid all the goals flying in we should also give special mention to Govt. Model High School, Sector Thirty Six and The Unique Model Academy in the Sub Junior Boys category and also Govt. Girls HSS in the School Girls category who were the only teams to record victories while keeping clean sheets.
