Unveiling the Drama: A Thrilling Recap of RFDL Season 3 Regional Qualifiers in the East & Mumbai Regions

The Regional Qualifiers of the Reliance Foundation Development League Season 3 witnessed thrilling encounters across the East and Mumbai regions, showcasing the burgeoning talent in Indian football.

East Region

In the East Region, the competition was fierce as three teams secured their spots in the next phase: East Bengal FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, and Adamas United SA. East Bengal FC emerged as frontrunners with an impressive 18 points, closely followed by their arch-rivals Mohun Bagan FC with 15 points.

The spotlight was on the intense derby clashes, where Mohun Bagan secured a resounding 5-1 victory on the first derby day, only for East Bengal to stage a remarkable comeback with a 2-0 win on the second occasion. Notably, in a mini-derby, East Bengal FC triumphed over Mohammedan SC with a 2-0 scoreline. Mohun Bagan Super Giant showcased their attacking prowess, emerging as the top scorers with 12 goals.

However, the surprise package of the season has to be Adamas United Sports Academy. They fought hard right from the beginning, churning out results in their favour, which eventually saw them qualify into the National Group Stage as the third team from the East Region. The highlight of their journey in the Regional Qualifiers came in the match against Mohun Bagan SG, when they won it with a 2-1 scoreline. The team from the East Region also won their matches against Odisha FC and Jamshedpur to secure their place in the top of the Regional Qualifers.

Mumbai Region

In the Mumbai Region, the competition was equally riveting, with RFYC, GMSC, and Mumbai City FC advancing to the National Group Stage. RFYC stood out as the undefeated team, showcasing remarkable consistency throughout the qualifiers.

Mumbai City FC displayed an impressive offensive game, netting a total of 29 goals, albeit conceding 17 goals defensively. GMSC shone with their defensive solidity, registering the most clean sheets. Alan Saji from RFYC emerged as the top scorer of the phase, while RFYC boasted the highest goal difference of 17. The fastest goal of the qualifiers came from Zeeyan Hanif Nevrekar of Iron Born FC, finding the net in the very first minute of a match.

While Reliance Foundation Young Champs maintained their form throughout, Mumbai City FC’s 1-0 loss in the final match of the Regional Qualifiers saw them ending as the third best team in the Region.Earlier when these two teams met, we had witnessed an absolute nail-biter. A thrilling 5-3 was the outcome in favour of the team in red. RFYC staged a stunning comeback after they trailed the Islanders 2-0 midway through the match.
