The Fighter Who Never Quit: Lokesh Sathyanathan’s Journey Beyond Setbacks

From discovering his speed on a football field to becoming an international long jumper and battling through a serious accident, Lokesh Sathyanathan opens up in a Reliance Foundation Sports special, Safar Champions Ka.

For Lokesh Sathyanathan, the journey began with football.

At seven, he started playing soccer, following in the footsteps of his father, who was also a footballer. But it was Lokesh’s speed that caught his father’s attention. Watching him run, his father told him, “This is not where you belong to.”

That moment set him on a new path.

In the latest episode of Reliance Foundation Sports Safar Champions Ka, Lokesh Sathyanathan opens up about the journey that has taken him from the football field to the long jump runway, the setbacks that tested his resolve and the people who helped him keep moving forward.

Training under his coach, Captain Muralitharan, an athlete who represented India, Lokesh began athletics at the age of 12. His dedication and hard work soon began to translate into success. He won his first gold medal for India at the U20 level, a milestone that also brought attention from universities in the United States, with NCAA opportunities and academic scholarships beginning to open up.

His journey reached another significant milestone at the NCAA Championships, where Lokesh produced a personal best of 8.21m. The performance also set a new Indian indoor record and established him as the third-leading Indian long jumper of all time.

Then, just two months before he was set to take that next step, life changed.

While on his way to training, Lokesh was involved in a serious motorbike accident after a car hit him. He was hospitalized, and the injury brought his athletic journey to an unexpected halt.

For his family, it was an incredibly difficult period. But even through the uncertainty, Lokesh found strength in the people around him. His father stood by him with a simple message: “Don’t worry about it. I’ve got you.”

That support became the foundation for his recovery.

The next chapter of Lokesh’s journey was strengthened by Reliance Foundation Sports. At a time when he needed the right environment to continue his development, RF Sports provided him with the opportunity and support to elevate his training and performance.

“They came in when I actually needed a place to elevate myself in terms of training and performance,” Lokesh says.

Today, he continues to pursue his ambitions as an international long jumper.

For his sister, Lokesh is a fighter. For his father, he is someone who has never been afraid to give everything on the field. And for Lokesh himself, the message is clear:

“Do your work. Let your results speak.”
