From a Small Town Dream to the Olympic Podium: The Journey of Lovlina Borgohain

From discovering boxing in 2012 to reaching the Olympic podium, Lovlina Borgohain opens up on her journey, her mother’s influence and the mindset that helps her overcome pressure in a Reliance Foundation Sports special, Safar Champions Ka.

For Lovlina Borgohain, boxing began with a name she had heard as a child, Muhammad Ali.

Growing up in a place where boxing facilities were scarce, the sport seemed distant. But in 2012, Lovlina stepped into boxing and began a journey that would eventually take her from a small town in Assam to the Olympic podium.

In the latest episode of Reliance Foundation Sports’ Safar Champions Ka, Lovlina Borgohain opens up about her journey, the role her mother played in shaping her mindset, the discipline that has guided her career and the importance of staying focused when the pressure is at its highest.

Her journey from 2012 to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games was built through years of struggle, sacrifice and perseverance. Reaching the Olympics was not easy. But when she finally arrived on that stage, Lovlina knew exactly what she had to do.

“When I went to the Olympics, I used to think, ‘Today is the day that I have to give my 100% and play. There’s nothing else.’ It doesn’t matter who is watching or what they are doing. I just have to give my 100%.”

That focus helped her make history. Winning an Olympic medal changed everything. The feeling was different. The atmosphere around her was different. But for Lovlina, the significance of the achievement went beyond her own success.

“Once I emerged as a boxer, the entire place changed.”

For her, sport has the power to transform more than just an athlete’s life. It can open doors, create opportunities and help develop communities and families. Through her journey, Lovlina also became a symbol of what sport can make possible. A place that once had little connection with boxing could now dream of producing champions.

At the heart of Lovlina’s journey, however, has always been her mother.

“Since childhood, I have had only one role model, and that is my mother.”

The struggles her mother faced, the way she overcame challenges and her ability to keep moving forward became lessons that Lovlina carried with her.

“I learned every single thing from my mother, so my mother is my role model.”

That mindset has remained central to Lovlina’s approach to competition. For her, focus is the foundation of everything.

“Remaining focused is very important, and if we stay focused, discipline will automatically follow. So, keep your focus on your aim.”

Even when the pressure becomes overwhelming, Lovlina has found her own way to deal with it. She tries to laugh, think positively and remind herself that whatever happens will ultimately be for the best.

Her approach is simple, but powerful.

“If there is more stress, laugh more. Let the mind be fooled.”

The journey has also been supported by a strong ecosystem around her. Lovlina credits Reliance Foundation for standing by her at every stage, from the grassroots level to the Olympic stage.

“Ever since I joined Reliance Foundation Sports, I have received support in everything. They are supporting from the grassroots level all the way to the Olympic level at every single stage.”

For an athlete, she says, having people who understand what is needed at every stage of the journey makes a significant difference.

Now, Lovlina is looking ahead with the same focus that has carried her through every challenge. There is unfinished business.

Stay focused. Let discipline follow. Keep moving forward.
