India delivered one of its most impressive outings at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2026, finishing the competition with five medals, one gold, two silver and two bronze, along with two national indoor records. Competing in Tianjin, China, the Indian contingent secured sixth place overall in the medal standings, underlining a strong and competitive showing against some of Asia’s leading indoor athletics nations.

The standout performance for India came from Tejaswin Shankar, who clinched the country’s only gold medal in the men’s heptathlon at the continental competition in Tianjin, China. Shankar accumulated 5,993 points to not only secure the top spot on the podium but also rewrite his own national indoor record. His previous national mark was 5,650 points, achieved at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational in Manhattan, Kansas in 2021. His performance across the seven events highlighted consistency and technical control, particularly in the hurdles, pole vault and the concluding 1000 metres.

India’s medal tally was further strengthened by Tajinderpal Singh Toor, who claimed silver in the men’s shot put. Toor registered a best throw of 20.05 metres, finishing narrowly behind the gold medallist in a highly competitive final. The performance reaffirmed his status as one of Asia’s leading shot putters and added valuable points to India’s overall standing.

Another silver medal came from Pooja Singh in the women’s high jump. The young athlete cleared 1.87 metres, which also marked a new national indoor record. In doing so, Pooja broke the Indian national indoor women’s high jump record previously held by Bobby Aloysius, a mark that had stood for over two decades.

India also secured two bronze medals through strong performances in field events. RF Athlete Ancy Sojan finished third in the women’s long jump with a best effort of 6.21 metres. In the men’s high jump, J Aadarsh Ram produced a season-best effort to claim bronze.
