Applying Different Training Forms In Coaching

Sandro Salami, Head of Youth at Reliance Foundation Young Champs, discussed the evolution and implementation of various training forms in his webinar session.

Resuming training is a systematic process involving various levels of progression. Coaches play a critical role in implementing this progression to meet the unique needs of each athlete and student they work with. Sandro Salami, Head of Youth at Reliance Foundation Young Champs, discussed the evolution and implementation of various training forms in his webinar session.

Sandro began the session by outlining the fundamentals of the subject, which were expanded upon during the discussion. The material was divided into three categories: the "Where," "How," and "What" of training forms.

Where to implement training forms?

Coaches may use training forms in a variety of situations. Salami listed the following training forms:

  • Game-like scenarios
  • High-intensity training
  • Age-specific training

Coaches may use the above strategies to get better outcomes from their training sessions. The athletes' growth and development are influenced by the use of these training methods.

How does the application of training forms impact the athletes?

Training sessions are performed with the aim of achieving specific outcomes and advancing the athlete. Salami discussed the following are the areas that are impacted by training forms:

  • Technical skills
  • Tactical analysis
  • Physical performance
  • Mental approach

These have an influence on the students and help them develop professionally and as better athletes.

What are the factors to consider when training?

  • Intensity of training
  • Load distribution
  • Level of players
  • Number of players

These factors shape the outcomes as training progresses.

Sandro then demonstrated different forms in various scenarios involving various age groups. The examples highlighted in regulating the learnings during the game. Sandro went on to explain the specific roles played by each individual player on-field and how it progresses in the game. Sandro also demonstrated how coaches can adapt and customise sets of forms to fit the situation they're in.

The session was concluded by identifying the advantages of participating in practical sessions.  Sandro then discussed the practices at Reliance Foundation Young Champs (RFYC). At RFYC, players go through the following stages of training:

  • Complex or chaos training
  • Quick decision-making sessions
  • Solution-driven sessions
  • High-intensity repetitions

This prepares players to deal with a variety of scenarios at any point during the game.

The session came to a close with a recap of the approaches that had been explored as well as a summary of the material.
