EMPOWERING ATHLETES WITH A NUTRITIONAL DIET AHEAD OF THE RACE DAY

Everyone is familiar with the notion that you are what you eat. Every human body is built differently & requires a specific nutritional diet. An athlete's body is no exception in that, it requires a personalized diet with timely requirements.

An athlete's body is no exception in that, it requires a personalized diet with timely requirements. Keeping this in mind, The Reliance Foundation Odisha Athletics High-Performance Center (HPC) recently conducted a workshop for athletes to empower them to plan their diets during race day. The one-day workshop, which was attended by more than 20 aspiring athletes, aimed to help them better understand some of the challenges that they are likely to face in the coming months with numerous competitions in the pipeline.


Reliance Foundation Nutritionist Mihira Khopkar, who herself is a qualified nutritionist & has helped various promising young athletes in the past, conducted a successful session in which she discussed how athletes can manage their diets based on the timings of one's race. She also shared her knowledge on how to best go about handling one's diet when an athlete needs to compete in multiple races such as heats, semi-finals, and finals for a day or two.

As an athlete, you spend most of your time travelling during tournaments & it gets very difficult to maintain the diet requirement on the go. This is where the workshop helped better educate the young participants on what, when and how much to consume at various times of the day while always keeping their respective race events in mind. "Earlier I used to be very sceptical about our eating habits, especially travelling across cities where we have to sometimes rely on local food due to the compact schedule we have, but now after Mihira Mam's workshop we have got an exact idea about what substitute food we can eat to support our dietary requirements in such times", says one of the athletes after attending the workshop.

The nutritionist also encouraged the athletes to make their proper diet plan in a diary and stick it in a place where they can always see it. Sticking one's plan somewhere the athletes can see acts as a reminder for them and always aids them to know what needs to be done concerning their diet on race day.


Once athletes formulated their diet, they received expert feedback from the nutritionist before implementing the final plan in an in-house Performance Graded Races (PGR) competition. This workshop on the diet is just one of the various initiatives taken by the Reliance Foundation Odisha Athletics HPC, which is renowned for nurturing and developing up-and-coming talents holistically.
