For Asmita Dey, judo became more than a sport. It became a way to carry forward a dream her father believed she could achieve. Growing up in Tripura, Asmita found her passion for sport at a young age. Her journey took her from local competitions to national medals, and eventually to training under Arjuna Awardee Yashpal Solanki, whose international-level approach helped shape her into a stronger judoka. When her father passed away, Asmita briefly thought about giving up the sport. But her mother reminded her of his dream - to see her become a great player and win an Olympic medal. On the 13th day after his passing, her coach called her back to training with one message: it was time to work towards winning a medal. She returned to the mat, kept herself focused through a difficult period and went on to win her first National Games gold. In 2026, she created history by becoming the first Indian judoka to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal. For Asmita, the journey is far from over.
