Asian Games 2026: RF athlete Sreeshankar wins silver, Lovlina Borgohain assures medal

Reliance Foundation (RF) athlete Murali Sreeshankar won his second successive Asian Games silver medal in the men’s long jump, while boxer Lovlina Borgohain assured herself of a medal at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 on Monday.

Sreeshankar produced a best jump of 8.07m to finish second. The Indian moved into the silver-medal position with his second-round effort and stayed there for the remainder of the competition.

China’s Shi Yuhao won gold with 8.17m, while Sreeshankar finished ahead of Uzbekistan’s Anvar Anvarov on countback after both recorded 8.07m. The result gave the RF athlete his second straight Asian Games silver following his runner-up finish at Hangzhou 2023.

RF athlete Lovlina Borgohain, meanwhile, progressed to the women’s 75kg boxing semi-finals with a commanding 5-0 unanimous decision over the Republic of Korea’s Suyeon Seong.
The Olympic bronze medallist won all three rounds on each judge’s scorecard to guarantee herself a second Asian Games medal, having won silver at Hangzhou. She will face reigning world champion Natalya Bogdanova of Kazakhstan in the semi-finals.

Chikitha Taniparthi also advanced to the women’s compound individual archery quarter-finals. The RF archer beat Chinese Taipei’s Chen Yi-Hsuan in a shoot-off after the pair were tied 148-148, hitting the bullseye with her decisive arrow.

India collect six athletics medals

India enjoyed a medal rush in athletics, collecting three silver and three bronze medals on Monday.

Gulveer Singh clocked a personal best 3:36.72 to win men’s 1500m silver, while Vithya Ramraj took bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles with a national record 54.75s. Parul Chaudhary added her second bronze of the Games in the women’s 5000m, clocking 15:14.61.

India also secured two medals in the men’s javelin throw, with Yash Vir Singh producing a personal best 85.72m for silver and Rohit Yadav taking bronze with 84.35m.

In shooting, Esha Singh won women’s 25m pistol silver after losing a dramatic shoot-off for gold, while Pincky Balhara claimed bronze in the women’s -78kg kurash event.
Priya Ghanghas also reached the women’s 60kg boxing semi-finals to assure herself of a medal.

Elsewhere, the Indian men’s cricket team advanced to the semi-finals after its quarter-final against Afghanistan was abandoned without a toss due to rain, with defending champions India progressing as the higher-seeded team.
