32 goals scored across six games in Mumbai & Delhi

The Reliance Foundation Youth Sports (RFYS) football tournament continued in full swing in Mumbai and Delhi on Friday. The Fr. Agnel Ground in Vashi played host to the matches in Mumbai, while the Greater Noida Sports Complex was the venue for the games in Delhi. There were four Junior boys category matches today with two in each location besides Delhi also hosting two Senior boys matches.

The Delhi leg began with Uttarakhand Public School facing Somerville School in a Senior Boys category qualifier. Somerville dominated possession but found it difficult to break down Uttarakhand. Their superiority eventually showed as they broke the deadlock before the break to go in with a slender 1-0 lead at half-time.

Somerville found their scoring boots in the second half and started playing some good attacking and fluid football. They added four more goals to their narrow 1-0 lead and raced into the next round comfortably.

The second match of the day in Delhi was a Junior Boys category match that saw Step by Step (SBS) School go up against Uttarakhand Public School. SBS were in control for the majority of the game and went in with a deserved 1-0 lead at half-time. They started the second half in the same vein as they hit the crossbar to make their presence felt early on. SBS eventually doubled their lead with a brilliant counter-attack. They scored another before full-time as Uttarakhand struggled for possession, winning the match 3-0.

Delhi’s third match was the second Senior Boys category qualifier of the day. It featured Ramagya School and Ryan International School. The first half saw Ryan International School take a lead and defend astutely to go into the half-time interval leading. Ramagya School though came back strong in the second half and equalised to make it 1-1. After both teams failed to find a winner, the match headed to penalties. Following a nervy shoot-out, Ramagya eventually capped off their brilliant comeback to win the match 5-4 on penalties.

The last match of the day in Delhi saw Ryan International School’s Junior boys category team face Indus Valley. Ryan International dominated the game from start to finish. They took the lead through a well-taken header after a delightful cross from the right. Another goal followed shortly after to see them go in at the break with a 2-0 lead. They added two more goals to make it 4-0 in the second half with the last goal culminating in a tap-in after a beautiful team move.

The first Junior Boys category match in Mumbai was between Balbharti and Dnyan Pushpa Vidya Niketan and Junior College. Both teams started the match well and tried to dictate terms. With the clock ticking down towards half-time, Dnyan Pushpa Vidya Niketan and Junior College struck at an opportune time to go in with a 1-0 advantage.

Balbharti reacted by bringing on a substitute who made instant impact by finding the equaliser within minutes of kick-off in the second half. The game ended 1-1 and went to penalties but not before a smart substitution by Balbharti that saw them replace their regular keeper with a defender. The move paid dividends as he made the necessary saves to win the game 3-2 on penalties.

The second and final match of the day in Mumbai was another Junior boys category match featuring Sadhu Vaswani International School and Don Bosco, Nerul. A number of records were set during this game that saw Don Bosco run riot against Sadhu Vaswani International School as they beat them by a landslide of 16 unanswered goals. They scored five goals in the first half and added eleven in the second. The match featured two hat-tricks, three braces and is the biggest score-line in the qualifiers so far.
