Celebrating International Women’s Day - The RFYS Wonder Girls

Season 4 of the RFYS National Championships was a landmark season in many aspects. Right from a record number of participating cities, institutions, players and athletes to the number of times national records were bettered, the 2019-20 season of the RFYS Championships got an unprecedented response to its call of #LeaveNoTalentBehind.

The 2019-20 season was also special due to the incredible performances by the girl athletes in both football and athletics.

This year, the RFYS Football & Athletics Championships got registrations from a whopping 24000+ girls. This scale of participation will surely inspire the current and future generation of young girl athletes to pursue sports and prove their skills on the sports field.

Notable Individual Performances

13-year old Guddegari Savithri from the Telangana State Sports School scored 35 goals during the city championships. This was the highest number of goals, scored by an individual player, across any category, at any stage of the tournament for the 2019-20 season! Antar Thakor and Alka Thakor from the Uttar Buniyadi Madhyamik and Uchatar Madhyamik School scored 17 goals each during the City Championships, reminding everyone of their goal-scoring capabilities.

The girl athletes also ensured that they kept records tumbling during the Athletics Championships as well. There were a total of 38 events in the 2019-20 RFYS season, where the female athletes bettered the previous season’s records. Kajal Sharma (Senior Girls 1500M and 5000M event), Sandra Sabu (Sub Junior Girls 200M and 400M event) and Ujala Kumari (College Girls 1500M and 5000M event) were among the top performers.

The Sub Junior Girls 200M event saw 4 girls better the National Record of 27.57s.

Sandra Sabu (25.82s), Siya Sawant (26.45s), Pooja Sree (26.81s) and Shreyasi Biswas (27.49s) bettered the National Record of 27.57s by some margin!

Across the City and National Championship Levels, there were a total of 38 new records created by the girls across 4 categories. These records were created in the individual events like 200M, 1500M, 5000M, High Jump, Long Jump.

Making it to the India National Football Team

The very best of the RFYS Football Tournament participants also got an opportunity to be scouted by AIFF scouts and stand a chance to represent India at the U-17 age group.

Babina Devi, Linda Chanu and Lavanya were part of the Indian u-15 Girls Team which won the SAFF u-15 Trophy. They defeated Bangladesh in the Finals via a penalty shoot-out.

Potential to perform better

Going by the above numbers, these young girls have proven the potential to win awards and medals for India at the international stage. They have proved their mettle at the RFYS Championships and are raring to go again and set new records.

While we were privileged to see these girl athletes giving their absolute best on the field and the pitch, our hopes of seeing more such talent set new records and break the old ones, have also increased.
